Traditional Clothes Dry Cleaning

Kilts, Highland dress, national costume and ceremonial wear cleaned and pressed, with trim and pleats looked at first.

We dry clean traditional clothes at The Boathouse in Gillingham: Scottish kilt and Highland dress, Irish dance costume, Welsh national costume, academic gown and hood, court dress and other national or ceremonial outfits. Bring the full set in so we can look at wool, tartan, silk, lace and any braid before we start.

Kilt, jacket, waistcoat, sporran strap and hose need to come back with the pleats set and the line of the jacket sharp. We agree the method with you at the counter, especially where a kilt is hand pleated or a gown has university trim that cannot take heat.

Kilt and Highland dress

Tartan kilt, Prince Charlie jacket, Argyll jacket, waistcoat, kilt hose and fly plaid are cleaned and pressed so the kilt hangs correctly on the buckles. We note whether the kilt is wool, tartan silk or a hire garment with a fixed pleat before we set the job.

National dress and folk costume

Irish step dance dress, Welsh national costume, Morris kit and other folk or national dress often mix velvet, lace, embroidery and heavy skirt panels. We look at each layer with you and agree what goes through together and what is finished by hand afterwards.

Academic and ceremonial dress

Academic gown, hood and mortarboard, court dress, robes and formal ceremonial wear are returned pressed and ready to wear. Tell us the ceremony date when you drop off.

Questions

What is eco dry cleaning?

Clothes go into water with a biodegradable detergent rather than the solvent a traditional dry cleaner would use. We press the piece afterwards and hand it back on a hanger.

We look at each garment with you and note stains before we start. If a fabric needs a different method, or if it is leather or suede we have not agreed to take, we will tell you at drop-off.

How fast is the turnaround?

Most cleaning is back within 48 hours of when we have the garments. That clock starts when you drop them in or when we collect, not when you submit the booking form.

Same-day work is possible when we can take it; ask when you book. Wedding dresses get their own timescale, agreed when we see the dress.

Do you do alterations?

Yes. We take up hems, close split seams, replace buttons and zips, and take garments in or let them out, all in the same building as the cleaning. A button starts at £5.50, a standard zip at £21.50 and trouser shortening at £21.50, with 10% off when you have three things done. The full list is on the prices page.

We agree the work with you first and clean the garment afterwards, so a new hem comes back properly finished instead of pressed over the old crease. Making a garment from scratch is the one thing we do not do.

Can you dry clean a kilt?

Yes. Tartan kilt, Prince Charlie jacket, waistcoat and the rest of a Highland outfit are cleaned and pressed so the pleats sit correctly. We look at the fabric and any hire pleats with you before we start.

Academic gown, Irish dance dress and other traditional or ceremonial pieces go through the same way. Drop in at The Boathouse on Ocean Drive, or book a collection across Medway.
